During Opening Night Live at Gamescom, 2K Games debuted Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a tactical RPG featuring the supernatural heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe. The game is developed by Firaxis Games, the developer of XCOM.
As reported by Polygon, Midnight Suns will feature heroes typically associated with the Marvel Comics imprint, including the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider, Blade, and Doctor Strange, as well as other magic users like Nico Minoru and Magik. The game will also include Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Wolverine, which will probably make the game more easily marketable.
Despite sharing a developer with XCOM, Midnight Suns will not share any gameplay mechanics with the legendary tactics franchise, according to an interview with head of development Jake Solomon. The biggest departure will come in how players improve and level up their skills, which will involve ‘down time’ between missions where players can interact and build relationships with the other heroes in the game:
“Robbie Reyes, the new Ghost Rider — he may want to play video games. Captain Marvel may want to go spar with you. Tony Stark may want to go play cards,” Solomon said. “You choose how to hang out with them, choose how you talk with them, give them gifts. There are [also] social clubs around The Abbey that you can join, and that affects your friendships with heroes. […] Some of these are pretty lighthearted [since] the story is dark enough.”
You can watch the trailer for Midnight Suns below. Gameplay from the title will be shown for the first time on September 1. The game itself will release in March of 2022.
