Some new players have hit the basketball court in an exclusive variant cover, as Miles Morales and Venom are ballin’ for Amazing Spider-Man #72. Heroes are generally athletic, but this cover takes it to the next level.
Kael Ngu is a Malaysian artist who has worked on numerous comic covers for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, IDW Publishing, and Image Comics. His covers include several issues of X-Men as well as X-Force, X-Factor, and Marauders. His latest Marvel project has placed Miles and Venom on a basketball court, in a few different variations.
On Twitter, artist Kael Ngu has revealed a new variant cover for Amazing Spider-Man #72. This variant features some friendly neighborhood Spider-people playing a game of hoops. The background also features a few additional iconic characters. This cover is available exclusively at Frankie’s Comics and Golden Apple Comics. The issue in question is a Sinister War tie-in by the creative team of Nick Spencer, Federico Vicentini, Alex Sinclair, and Joe Caramagna.
In this cover, Miles is seen sidestepping Venom. He has the basketball and is shifting direction on the court. Miles is in his traditional Spider-Man suit, with amazing kicks – in standard Miles fashion. In the back right, Carnage can be seen causing a commotion by throwing around some chairs, clearly upset by Miles outsmarting Venom. The back left features Peter Parker’s Spider-Man holding onto the arm of the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk. Just behind Miles and Venom is a digital sign that reads “Frankie’s Comics,” though several letters have been blocked by the two players’ bodies. This variant is a lot of fun, particularly since it presents Miles and Venom in a new way than fans usually see them. Venom can often be an antagonist, though he has been known to be a rather sporty symbiote if his skateboarder days of the 1990s are taken into consideration.
Basketball is something Miles Morales has been known to enjoy – even in costume. He did this in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #24, playing with soon-to-be MCU star Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel). Seeing him in a more recreational setting is really fun, and helps differentiate him from the significantly less sporty Peter Parker. Carnage, on the other hand, is the same as ever; the murderous symbiote doesn’t seem like he’d be a regular spectator of any sport, but he does like to cause chaos. Similarly, Kingpin seems to be showing his true nature by preparing to throw his snack at Miles, with Peter ensuring a fair game.
Thus far, this is the fourth Spider-Man/Venom basketball variant. The first was for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #23 in February 2021. The next was Amazing Spider-Man #68 followed up by Venom #35, both of which released in June 2021. These featured Miles jumping towards the basket, Miles dribbling down the court, and Venom dunking while pushing down Peter Parker as Spider-Man. The latest cover is the first to feature Venom going up against Miles. Each of these variants also featured the digital advertising for the comic shops that these are exclusives for. This Miles vs. Venom basketball variant by Kael Ngu for Amazing Spider-Man #72 is available for presale on August 7, 2021. The issue itself releases August 25, 2021.
