We think we’ve found the perfect way to describe curiosity ‘No Thing’. It’s an endless-turner, to borrow a naming structure from endless-runners, as you are constantly moving, but instead of changing lanes or making well-timed jumps, you are turning whenever there’s a corner.
That’s doing No Thing a disservice of course, as it has ambitions that are way beyond that. It’s a trippy experience, as you follow the story of an office clerk taking a message to the Queen of Ice, in a totalitarian regime of the future. Except the future happens to be 1994. Cue a vision of the future by way of Lawnmower Man and Tron.
It’s a sensory experience as much as it is a video game, with a fantastic chiptune soundtrack, surreal vistas, and – their words, not ours – a migraine-inducing story. It may well be that No Thing is a vehicle for some low-grade hypnotism, or at least a Magic Eye or two, so keep that in mind if you’re going to play.
Reviews have been good for No Thing, praising its focus on story and production, coupled with psychedelic and monochromatic art that is a fresh addition to the genre. It’s been a mainstay of Humble Bundles for some time now, as it’s been on the PC for five years, but it’s finally making its way to consoles, and our bodies are ready.
No Thing is out now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and starts at a stupidly-low £1.99 from the Xbox Store. Keep an eye out for our full review of No Thing on Xbox coming your way real soon.
