Currently, Among Us is available on PC, mobile, and Nintendo Switch with Xbox and PlayStation versions coming in 2021. However, the game is only available in a digital format. A Collector’s Edition on PC that’s arriving soon left some fans hopeful for a physical copy of the game, but that sadly won’t be happening. However, there’s actually a good reason why.

Limited Run Games, a company known to make limited runs of both physical video games and game soundtracks, has announced the Among Us Collector’s Edition for PC. This edition includes a reversible poster, a jewel-case soundtrack, and even a real Emergency Button. As with many of Limited Run Games’ titles, this edition also includes a steelbook. However, there’s no physical copy of the game inside. Instead, there’s a download card for both Steam and the Epic Games Store.

It may seem strange that out of everything Among Us‘ Collector’s Edition includes, a physical game isn’t one of them. This may be especially surprising since Limited Run Games is known for its physical game preservation. Since the announcement was made, it looks as if some fans are wondering why a physical copy of Among Us is missing. Thankfully, Limited Run Games has given them an answer.

Is Among Us DRM-Free & What That Means For Physical Releases

Among Us PC Collectors Edition

The steelbook included in the Among Us Collector’s Edition will presumably hold the Concept Art & Interviews Disc included with the set, since there’s no DVD/CD version of the game shipping out to buyers. When asked about this on Twitter, Limited Run Games stated that since Among Us is not DRM-Free, it couldn’t be sold as a physical game.

DRM-Free means that the game could theoretically be shared online without consequence, which is likely why developer InnerSloth didn’t make Among Us DRM-Free in the first place. Among Us is only free on iOS and Android, and it costs around $5 on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Nintendo Switch, so it doesn’t really make sense for the company to have made the PC version of their game DRM-Free, especially considering that InnerSloth is a small indie studio (and didn’t expect Among Us to be as popular as it is now) that used to rely on smaller amounts of income.

While it still seems a bit strange that Limited Run Games is selling a Collector’s Edition for a digital copy of a game, there’s actually a good reason for it. Thankfully, the Among Us Collector’s Edition still comes with a lot of physical items that fans of the social deduction game should really love.
