On the road to this week’s release of Godzilla vs. Kong, director Adam Wingard (V/H/S, You’re Next, The Guest, Blair Witch) has set up his next project, a feature film adaptation of the beloved 1980s animated series “ThunderCats” for Warner Bros!

Deadline reports that Wingard is directing the film and also writing the script with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. An early version of the script was written by David Coggeshall.

The site notes that Wingard “will turn all this into a hybrid of CGI and animation.” Deadline adds, “The film will use the animated series as a jumping off point, but then Wingard will take it in a direction he has been thinking about for many years.”

“The series focuses on a group of cat-like humanoid aliens who live on the dying planet Dundera. The ThunderCats are an elite group that is charged with saving the species.”

“ThunderCats” was created by Tobin “Ted” Wolf, with the original animated series running from 1985 to 1989 and subsequently spawning toys, comics, a video game and more.
