Rumors are flying that the Nintendo Switch Pro will have exclusive games, including titles provided by third-party developers. There have been rumors about an upgraded Switch model in the works for years now, with the most recent saying that the Nintendo Switch has an OLED screen and can hit 4K resolution when docked.

The Nintendo Switch has been incredibly popular since its launch, but it’s now facing competition from technically superior machines. It was possible to port some hardware-intensive third-party games to the Switch, like Doom Eternal, but that’s going to be more difficult in the PS5/Xbox Series X generation. As such, it’s not surprising to learn that Nintendo could have a stronger machine in development. A Switch Pro could have an easier time handling third-party games that would struggle on the older model, even including ones made for the other consoles. There are even rumors that Nintendo Switch Pro development kits are in the hands of studios at this very moment.

It seems that there will be some games locked to the Switch Pro. A leaker named NateDrake has claimed on ResterEra that the Switch Pro will have some exclusives, including games made by third-party developers. They know of the existence of at least one Switch Pro exclusive.

Nintendo Switch 4K Model Differences

The people who already own a Switch shouldn’t be too concerned about losing access to exclusives. Nintendo has sold almost eighty million Switch units, putting the Nintendo Switch ahead of the 3DS’ lifetime sales. A Switch Pro likely won’t come near those figures, so there isn’t much incentive for Nintendo or any third-party developers to restrict the potential audience for a game. The New Nintendo 3DS was a similar upgraded system and that only had a few exclusives, as well as access to Super Nintendo games on the Virtual Console. The main draw was the effect the upgraded hardware had on existing games.

If the rumors regarding the Switch Pro’s technical prowess are correct, then it will be focused on improving the visuals of its games. This isn’t a make or break strategy for Nintendo. Games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxeand Pokémon Sword and Shield might not look like the high-quality games on the PS5 or Xbox Series X, but they still ship millions of copies around the world. A resolution bump won’t improve the gameplay of these titles, which is really the key factor. As such, there likely won’t be too many exclusives on the Switch Pro. It’s more likely that it will have some third-party PS5/Xbox Series X ports that the regular Nintendo Switch cannot handle.
