Amy Adams’ The Woman in the Window adaptation finally has a release date. The psychological thriller film is based on the novel of the same name by A.J. Finn about an agoraphobic, voyeuristic woman who watches her neighbors from her vast brownstone in New York City. Adams plays the titular woman, Dr. Anna Fox, as she begins to question her sanity after a woman who lives across the street, played by Julianne Moore, vanishes. Things take a turn, though, when Jennifer Jason Leigh’s character shows up claiming to be the woman Anna says she saw murdered.

Moore, Leigh, and Adams will be joined by a cast of A-listers, including Brian Tyree Henry, Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, and Tracy Letts. Letts also wrote the screenplay, with the movie directed by Joe Wright, whose last film, Darkest Hour, was nominated for multiple Academy Awards. The Woman in the Window has faced a long road to release. In addition to reshoots to clear up the film’s ending, the movie has switched hands several times, beginning as a Fox 2000 Pictures film prior to the Disney-Fox merger.

The Woman in the Window was eventually acquired by Netflix,  and now the streamer has set a release date for the long-awaited film. A brief announcement clip shows Dr. Anna Fox looking through her window with her camera, presumably to spy on her favorite neighbors. The video reveals the movie will arrive on Netflix May 14.

The Woman in the Window will hit Netflix two weeks before the streamer’s other big May film, Zack Snyder’s upcoming Army of the Dead. The movies are part of a larger effort by the streamer to release a new film every week in 2021. While some of the movies are smaller in comparison, May will truly be a month of star power for the streamer with this pair of films set to hit Netflix. How well The Woman in the Window performs, though, remains to be seen.

Book adaptations are known to be hit or miss. Adams recently starred in another adaptation for Netflix, Hillbilly Elegy, and while her performance in the film was appreciated, the movie was largely blasted by critics. Fortunately, Adams has a knack for turning around bad films with her magnetic screen presence. Alongside Moore and Leigh, The Woman in the Window is stacked with star power, so even if it fails to capture the book’s fast-paced twists and turns, seeing the trio together on screen will be a delight no matter what.
