Apple’s iPhone SE 2020 is worth buying in 2021, although it might not be the right smartphone choice for all consumers. Figuring out whether it is worth going with Apple’s cheaper iPhone will largely depend on the individual needs of the buyer. However, there are enough selling points (and weaknesses) to help make the purchase decision easier.

Apple launched the iPhone SE in early 2020. This is actually a second-generation model, following the original iPhone SE which launched back in 2016. With four years between the two models, the latest iPhone SE did take its time in arriving. Along with the iPhone SE, Apple also launched the iPhone 12 series in 2020. This resulted in a number of new iPhone models to choose from, including the all-new mini model.

The major selling point with the iPhone SE 2020 is the price. At just $399 for the base model, this is arguably the cheapest way to get a new iPhone outside of buying an older generation model. The cost alone makes it a great option for those who are limited on budget, as well as anyone thinking of picking up a new phone for younger users. Likewise, any users that are likely to prefer a more basic iPhone experience will find the iPhone SE a good option. Although the iPhone SE is a cheap iPhone, it has been designed to offer a premium Apple experience. However, it is missing some of the more advanced premium features on offer with more expensive iPhone 12 phones.

Reasons Against Buying an iPhone SE 2020

There’s no major reason not to buy an iPhone SE at the price, but it’s not going to be the right option for all consumers. The main issue is that it is more of a basic phone. Although the software is the same as the new iPhone 12 series, the hardware is not. For example, the iPhone SE does come with newer components compared to older iPhone models, but not when compared to the iPhone 12 series. The most obvious difference in this respect is the 2020 iPhone SE is powered by Apple’s A13 process. That’s the same processor as the iPhone 11 series, but an older chip than the A14 included with the iPhone 12.

For any consumer who wants a more advanced and premium smartphone, it is likely worth checking out an iPhone 12 series phone instead. The 12 series not only includes a newer and faster performance, but also a better camera setup, as well as support for Face ID and 5G. In addition, the iPhone SE 2020 is not compatible with Apple’s new MagSafe accessories, unlike the iPhone 12 series. However, with the cheapest iPhone 12 model starting at $699, there is a significant jump in the price. Not to mention, the cheapest iPhone 12 comes with its own compromises, including a smaller display than the other models.

Another reason why some may want to consider holding off is the rumor that a new iPhone SE Plus model might arrive in 2021. This is expected to be a larger phone and therefore will suit those buyers in need of more screen real estate than the 4.7 inches on offer with the standard iPhone SE. Then again, while there have been suggestions the iPhone SE Plus will launch this year, nothing has been confirmed. Due to this, opting to hold off for the Plus model is going to result in a waiting game. If a phone is needed soon, then going for Apple’s iPhone SE 2020 is likely to the best option right now.
