Apart from trying to survive the harsh and chaotic wilderness, in Valheim, players will need to summon and defeat ancient monsters, the Forsaken, to restore order to the realm. Valheim is loosely based on Norse mythology. In it, players take on the role of a mighty warrior Viking who falls in battle and finds themselves in Valheim, tasked with destroying Odin’s enemies and bringing peace to the purgatory-style landscape. Like Rust and other survival games, players will need to take care of their basic needs and craft a shelter and equipment that will allow them to settle Valheim and protect themselves from any threat. As players improve their strength and their base, they will be able to summon and fight each of the bosses.

The second boss players will need to defeat is called The Elder. The Elder is a bipedal, treelike creature with three devastating attacks. Players will likely find it far more difficult to kill than the first boss, Eikthyr. To summon The Elder, players will need to gather Ancient Seeds and burn them at The Elder’s altar. Ancient Seeds are Greydwarf young and can be obtained as a random drop after defeating certain varieties of Greydwarf. Players will need to venture into the Black Forest to find these creatures and eventually summon The Elder. Here’s how to get Ancient Seeds in Valheim and use them to summon The Elder.
How to Defeat Greydwarves in Valheim
The first step to getting Ancient Seeds is finding and defeating certain kinds of Greydwarf. In particular, there is a chance for players to get Ancient Seeds from a Greydwarf Brute and a Greydwarf Shaman. There is also a chance to find one in a Chest, and it is a guaranteed drop if players manage to destroy Greydwarf Nests, which constantly spawn these enemies.
Players will need to head to the Black Forest to encounter these Greydwarfs. Killing them is usually a simple task. Greydwarf Brutes use a melee attack to deal 40 damage, and they have 200 HP. Greydwarf Shamans are tougher to face. They use a ranged, poisonous breath attack and a melee attack, and it also has the ability to heal themselves and any other Greydwarfs around them. Players should bring both a melee weapon, like a sword or knife, and a bow and arrows to fight these creatures. Bronze items tend to work best.
How to Use Ancient Seeds in Valheim
Once players get three Ancient Seeds from fighting Greydwarfs, they will need to take them to The Elder’s altar. Players can usually find the altar’s exact location by reading a Runestone like the one they looked at when searching for Eikthyr. The Runestone tends to spawn randomly, but it is often found inside a Burial Chamber. It’s also possible for players to simply stumble upon the altar somewhere within the forest without ever reading the Runestone.
Players will need to place the Ancient Seeds in the Fire Bowl to summon The Elder. It’s probably a good idea to enter this fight with plenty of food, a small base nearby with a fire and bed that serves as the new spawn point, and a group. Players should also make sure to defeat any nearby enemies, or The Elder will compel them to join the fight.
Players should try to fight The Elder from range, as its close-range Stomp attack can be devastating to players fighting in melee range. However, at long range, The Elder can use a Vine attack, so players will also want to find cover prior to summoning it, just in case. The Vines can down trees, which can fall on the player character and cause even more damage, so mobility will be key in this fight.
Players will need to defeat The Elder to obtain the Swamp Key. This Key opens Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome. Inside these Crypts, players are most likely to find Scrap Iron to make Iron tools and weapons.
