At long last, Marvel has Silk back on its publishing schedule, slated for a spring 2021 release. After all the major delays of 2020, it’s easy to overlook at times the delays that filtered down to smaller projects. But filter down they did, and Silk’s solo title was one of many that got pushed back. In keeping with Marvel Comics’ world being so abundant with heroes and heroines that the roster of lesser-known, brand-new ones just keeps growing, the heroine Silk, real name, Cindy Moon, is well on her way to establishing herself in her own right. She first appeared as a cameo in The Amazing Spider-Man #1, as a Korean-American with powers similar to Spidey himself, spider bite and all.

Created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, she made a name for herself as a member of the Spider-Army/Web-Warriors, and now she’s featured in her own solo series. Which was great, until the series was pushed back from its original release date in July of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, for those who have eagerly waited to see Silk in her own solo adventures, the delay was not to last forever.
AIPT has released an exclusive peek of the variant cover for issue #2 ahead of its going into print. Freelancer Rose Besch is credited with handling the art for the variant cover, and InHyuk Lee handled the cover, Maureen Goo handling the writing and Takeshi Miyazawa handling the comic art. From what’s been revealed so far, Silk looks to be bringing a healthy does of bubbly, edgy cool to the profession of superheroism, from her rocking sneakers to the cup of bubble tea she’s sipping on, to her self-confident smirk. She easily fits right into not just the Marvel Comics universe, but the Spider-Verse more importantly.
Issue #2 itself seems to be focusing on a series of gangsters in Queens getting murdered, and not only is there blood left behind, but fur too. Given the amount of animal-based villains that OG Spider-Man as well as his many iterations have come across in the past, from the Lizard to the Rhino, it probably comes as no surprise that there’s yet another wicked beast on the prowl. And to prevent further bloodshed, of small-time villains or otherwise, Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk, will have to figure out what’s going down before things get worse.
It’s great to see a growing variety of iterations of Spider-Man’s original concept, from Spider-Gwen and now to Silk. Of all the heroes and heroines in the Marvel canon, it seems the creators have the most fun branching out from Peter Parker’s mantle, placing the same basic hero concept in different genders and nationalities. Perhaps it is because Spider-Man is such a beloved staple of the Marvel Comics universe, as well as of its wide array of media adaptations and franchises. And with Silk‘s solo series finally moving forward, she has a chance to become just as beloved.
