Razer recently unveiled its Project Hazel face mask, highlighting its many smart features and appealing design. As a result, it is likely that many consumers are wondering when these smarter masks will be released and how much they will cost. While product announcements do tend to provide release date and pricing information, the lack of these details at the time was not the only difference with Razer’s recent smart mask unveiling.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, face masks have become a part of everyday life for many people. Although there has been some debate about how effective the most basic masks are in stopping the spread of coronavirus, the general consensus is any covering is better than none. However, for those looking for an increased level of protection, there are options available, including N95 respirators like Project Hazel.
Although announced last month, Razer has still not provided any information on when Project Hazel N95 face masks will be available to buy or the price they will be sold out. In fact, there remains a chance that Project Hazel will never become available as a product that consumers can purchase online or in stores. In addition, even if it does arrive to market, the finished product could end up being very different to the one announced in January.
Why Project Hazel Might Never Become Available
Project Hazel is a concept and not a finished product. It is not unusual for companies to announce concepts with them often acting as a visual way to articulate the direction the company is moving in or considering at the time. Razer said as much about its smart mask in the original announcement, explaining that its concept designs are often used to “evaluate feedback from the community” and can “influence Razer’s future product portfolio.” In addition to pointing out some of its previous concept designs have gone to market, Razer explained others have only ended up as “elements” added to different products.
Razer does state that it plans to continue to optimize the design and test the smart mask, so it is possible that it will eventually get a release date and a price. However, any finished product could look or function very differently to the one first showcased during CES 2021. That could include a reduction in the number of smart features, such as the Razer Chroma RGB lighting and the built-in mic and amplifier, or result in a different design completely. As a result, the company could end up releasing a far more basic mask, albeit smarter than the one the company released last year. Regardless of how the concept does develop over time, there still remains no guarantees that Razer’s Project Hazel smart mask will become available to buy in the future, let alone soon.
