Will this new content be the bullseye the game needs?
It won’t be long before we see what Square Enix has planned for Marvel’s Avengers.
In a post from the game’s official Twitter account, the firm said that it will be showing off its upcoming Operation: Hawkeye – Future Imperfect, alongside what the upgraded version of its superhero romp looks like running on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. This War Table broadcast is set to go live on February 16.
This DLC is focused on the original Hawkeye – aka Clint Barton aka the dude with the bow and arrows hanging out with literal super soldiers and gods – with a set of new missions. It comes in the wake of Marvel’s Avengers’ first round of DLC, Operation: Kate Bishop – Take AIM – which debuted in December 2020 after a slight delay. This is the second part of the story that introduced Bishop to the game.
Square Enix said that free PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades would be coming to Marvel’s Avengers at some point, but hasn’t provided much in the way of detail about what these will entail just yet. The Japanese publishing giant has said that people will be able to choose between two different modes; one which prioritises resolution, while another targets a 60fps frame rate. This was initially set to be released in during 2020 but was bumped into 2021 in October.
Marvel’s Avengers debuted for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia in September of last year, but hasn’t done as well as publisher Square Enix hoped. In its financials at the end of 2020, the Japanese firm’s games division posted a ¥5 billion ($48.4 million) operating income loss for the six months ending September 30, with Square laying the blame at Marvel’s Avenger’s feet.
The company’s president Yosuke Matsuda has said that the plan to drive sales is, well, to release an awful lot of DLC. A data mine from November 2020 points to other big-name Marvel characters like Black Panther and War Machine coming to the game.
