The Umbrella Academy season 3 will reportedly begin filming in early 2021. Following a successful first season, Netflix brought The Umbrella Academy back for season 2 in 2020. The second season once again saw the Hargreeves children faced with trying to stop an impending apocalypse but in the past. All of them were transported to different points in the 1960s by Five (Aidan Gallagher) and lived separate lives before he brought them back together to save the world.

The Umbrella Academy season 2 might have ended with the Hargreeves children saving the day, but they also irreparably changed the timeline. When they returned to the present day, their father Reginald Hargreeves is still alive and in charge of the Sparrow Academy, not the Umbrella Academy. This surprising reveal will be at the center of Umbrella Academy season 3’s plot. Netflix has yet to officially announce that another season is on the way, but it appears that is just a formality at this point as production is gearing up.

Filming on The Umbrella Academy season 3 is slated to begin in early 2021 according to a new production listing shared by Production Weekly (via What’s On Netflix). The new batch of episodes will reportedly begin filming on February 1, 2021, with the entire season expected to be completed by the end of August. Screen Rant reached out to Netflix for comment.

The Umbrella Academy season 2 what the posters reveal

The notice of when filming will begin on The Umbrella Academy season 3 should be taken as a great sign that Netflix is renewing the show. This shouldn’t be a surprise as season 2 was a massive hit and the show is currently the streaming service’s biggest piece of superhero/comic book IP. However, there is always a chance the February 2021 start date won’t be achieved. The possibility of productions shutting down again if COVID-19 cases continue to rise is legitimate. Meanwhile, Netflix has recently shown that they’re not afraid to suddenly cancel shows that are being held up by such delays, as they’ve already axed GLOW and others.

If The Umbrella Academy season 3 starts filming in early 2021, then more good news for the show should be on the way. Potential casting announcements could provide more clues to the identities of the Sparrow Academy or tease other fallouts from the changes to the timeline. There is no shortage of questions fans want to be answered, so casting and eventual set photos could provide them with the information they crave. If everything goes smoothly with production, a very late 2021 release is even possible. At the very least, this schedule should assure that season 3 of The Umbrella Academy will be on Netflix by sometime in 2022.
