Sony is giving popular Japanese YouTubers a chance to try the PlayStation 5 and posting videos online starting in early October. Plenty of footage of PS5 games is already available online thanks to several next-gen reveal events from Sony, but these new videos might provide a less scripted look at some of Sony’s upcoming games.
Neither next-gen console has the launch game line-up that it probably wants, largely due to delays resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Even games that seemed in some way too big to be pushed back – like Halo Infinite – are now missing the launch window. On the PS5 side, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, which is said to make full use of the console’s SSD by nearly eliminating load times, has also been pushed back. Still, there are a handful of games that will make it worthwhile to buy a PS5 on day one for some players. Bluepoint’s remake of Demon’s Souls is one of its launch day highlights, along with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Godfall, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

With more than a month to go before the PS5 hits store shelves, Sony has plenty of time to keep making the case for its new console. One way it’s set to do that is through YouTube Gaming Week, an event that brings Japanese YouTubers together to celebrate games. During the event, Sony says it will let popular YouTubers go hands-on with the PS5, as WCCFTech reports. The event runs from September 24th to October 4th, and once it ends, Sony will begin sharing videos of the content creators’ experiences with the new console. Sony says it will share the creators’ reactions, but it hasn’t made clear exactly what kind of footage it will be sharing, or if it will let the participating YouTubers post footage of gameplay on their own. The company does say it plans to host similar events leading up to the PS5’s launch on November 12th.
It’s highly unlikely that Sony will allow any totally candid footage of gameplay to come out of this event, but with so little time left before the PS5 is released, now is the time to start showing more gameplay footage if it wants to make the case for its next-gen hardware. Aside from its much-hyped SSD, Sony doesn’t seem to have anything groundbreaking to show for the PS5, and players would be right to have some suspicions over whether it’s really worth the asking price.
On the other hand, Sony clearly doesn’t need any help convincing players to pre-order a PS5. When they became available, PS5 pre-order traffic was so heavy that it crashed several retailers’ website, and neither they nor Sony have been able to keep them in stock. There are obviously plenty of players who don’t need any more reason to pick up a PS5, but seeing some genuine hands-on gameplay could prove whether the next-gen console is all it’s being made out to be.
