Square Enix has announced that another post-launch hero and more information will be unveiled for Marvel’s Avengers during another War Table stream early next week. This is the third such stream to reveal new information about the upcoming loot-driven superhero title. It will also be the last one before the game releases on Friday, September 4, so the publisher will likely pull out all the stops to spur on excitement. After several weekends of beta testing, the reception to the game has been lukewarm among critics, but the general audience already invested in the Marvel universe are eagerly anticipating jumping into the boots, armor, or purple pants of their favorite heroes.

As far as blockbuster AAA releases go, Marvel’s Avengers has been running unopposed. August and September are full of rereleases, nostalgic throwbacks, and other niche releases, but not much in the way of original massive titles. Several games originally scheduled for this time period have been delayed into next year due to a tumultuous year, with Marvel’s Avengers even suffering a delay into September back in January. The September release date initially raised concerns regarding running up against the launch of new consoles, but Square Enix has confirmed support for free upgrades for owners of both console editions when they decided to go next-gen.

At next week’s War Table stream, being held on September 1, the developers at Crystal Dynamics will give a final overview of Marvel’s Avengers, as well as a peek at another new hero coming to the game after release. This will come as part of a deep dive into the first post-launch “story season”, which will continue the narrative of the game beyond the main campaign, which is dubbed the “Reassemble” story. The team promises a focus on hero progression, hints and tips for taking on different types of enemies, and details about late-game content for those focused on loot.

According to the announcement, “minds will be blown and wishes granted” at this third War Table, for players will get to see a chunk of the game’s “extensive slate of additional heroes, villains, missions, regions, and gameplay modes.” Players officially already know that Hank Pym and Hawkeye will be joining the fight on all platforms, while Spider-Man will be swinging in exclusively on PlayStation consoles. In addition, a datamine of the recent beta build reveals a long list of potential additions, ranging from well-known MCU stars like Scarlet Which to deep cuts like Mar-Vell.

It certainly makes sense for Square Enix to present one final push for Marvel’s Avengers in its week of release. The game seems like a surefire success considering its connections to the unstoppable Marvel universe of characters, but some players came away from the beta unconvinced about dedicating themselves to this specific live service. The new War Table will have to prove that the heroes differentiate themselves and their moves considerably as the game goes on, even the ones added post-release. If those potential problems are snuffed out and all else goes well, Marvel’s Avengers could be an everlasting juggernaut in the same vein as Marvel’s yearly movie output.
