After a 26-year wait, Battletoads has returned to the limelight with a brand-new reboot – but Xbox, Rare, and iam8bit want to ensure that consumers don’t forget the series’ origins on NES. The latest take on the beloved franchise is now available on PC and Xbox One for any eager consumers and is the result of a collaboration between the legendary Rare LTD and indie game developer DLaLa Studios. Of course, the final project is not without a few warts.

The latest Battletoads has proven to be divisive in its reception (as was the original NES title upon its debut), but fans are generally quite happy with how well the reboot has gone. The Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic, over-the-top combat, mid-game genre changeups, and laugh-out-loud dialogue have been highlights of the newest game. Other less-than-stellar takeaways point out that the title does lack some polish and online co-op is simply not available.

Still, it’s hard to ignore the excitement that fans have for the Rare revival. This same excitement is why Xbox Game Studios and iam8bit have teamed up to re-release the original Battletoads game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The reprinted NES classic is a limited collector’s item (there are only 2,000 in existence) that comes with “a premium foldout box, two apropos cartridge colors, painstakingly restored full-color archival artwork, exclusive pack-ins, and as is the collector’s tradition, a foil-stamped dust cover.” The two cartridge colors are “Translucent Zitz Green” and “Rare Pimple Brown,” with the brown cartridge, in particular, featuring one-in-eight odds of being pulled from the SKU – which is currently being sold for $99.99 USD.

Alongside news of the NES reprint was the announcement of a new Battletoads vinyl record from iam8bit, which features songs from both the NES original and the newly-released Battletoads title. All in all, it appears as if the aggressive amphibians are back in a big way thanks to this reboot. Heck, even Rare’s own Sea of Thieves is getting in on the excitement with a Battletoads-themed ship option for anyone that completes the first act of the new game.

With Battletoads now returning, that only leaves a handful of other Rare franchises to resurrect. Rumors are currently making the rounds that one of the planned revivals pertains to a new Perfect Dark game being spearheaded by Xbox Game Studios’ new developer dubbed The Initiative, but those claims remain unconfirmed at this time. Meanwhile, others are hoping that Banjo-Kazooie can find its way back with a reboot or sequel, but there are no signs of any development on that front.
