A new international trailer for Tenet gives fans new insight into time reversal, the concept at the heart of Christopher Nolan’s espionage thriller. The movie is finally set to release in international markets in late August, and will hit theaters in the US and China in early September. Initially meant to lead the summer blockbuster season, Tenet was pushed back twice before being delayed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Warner Bros. then took the unprecedented decision to release the movie at different dates in different markets, based on the status of the pandemic.

The movie, which stars John David Washington. Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki and Kenneth Branagh is billed as an espionage thriller that uses the concept of time inversion. Similar to Nolan’s classic thriller Inception, the concept at the heart of the film is designed to confuse audiences and make the central plot difficult to unravel without watching it. Recent marketing efforts have focused on driving home the point that the movie isn’t about time travel but rather time reversal, or inversion. There was also a recent video released explaining the concept of the movie’s title, all of which points to the movie revolving around a central event that takes place both backwards and forwards in time. However, nothing is ever certain in a Nolan movie.

Now, the latest international trailer for Tenet (via Leffat), produced for the Finnish market, teases more time reversal action. The 30-second TV spot reveals that Washington’s protagonist is involved in some sort of cold war related to technology that reverses the flow of time. There is also new dialogue from Dimple Kapadia’s Susan, who says “we are being attacked by the future.” You can watch the trailer below.

The bold Finnish text that appears on the trailer says “Time is running out” when translated into English. This could of course refer to the fact that the movie releases in just a few weeks, but is also clearly a reference to the movie’s preoccupation with time and the idea that the protagonists are up against the clock to prevent some sort of apocalypse from happening. The trailer also teases some unseen footage, including more from the hotel room interaction between Pattinson and Washington, where the latter is explaining time inversion to the former. The new dialogue sees Washington questioning whether he’s lost his edge.

While short, this trailer is impressive, showing off the practical action scenes, and intriguing plot details. It further reinforces the idea that the movie’s narrative is not going to play out in a linear timeline, with the characters spending at least part of the movie inverting the flow of time. It also reveals a hint about the plans of Branagh’s Russian oligarch, who seems to be using the time inversion technology to attack the present from his own future.

All of which is to say that Tenet looks like a typical Nolan film, obsessed with the concept of time, and how humans perceive it. It also seems like it will requite multiple viewings in order to understand its plot properly, similar to Inception, which is the most similar, in tone and concept, of Nolan’s previous films to this one.
