Denise Johnson, the vocalist known for her work with A Certain Ratio and Primal Scream, has died, The Guardian and The Independent report. She was 56 years old. A cause of death has not been revealed.
Born and raised in Manchester, Johnson began her career as a vocalist in the group Fifth of Heaven. She performed with Primal Scream from 1990 to 1995 and came to prominence after appearing on the band’s 1991 album Screamadelica, singing on hits such as “Higher Than the Sun” and “Don’t Fight It, Feel It.”
Johnson worked with several bands throughout the ’90s, including A Certain Ratio. She was an integral member of the ARC live lineup starting in 1990 and also contributed to four of the group’s albums, including 1990’s acr:mcr, which featured “Be What You Wanna Be.” She is also slated to appear on their forthcoming album *ACR Loco*.
In a statement, A Certain Ratio said Johnson “has appeared over 200 times with the band in those 30 years, adding her uniqueness to the ACR catalogue pre and post 1990.” They continued, “She’s irreplaceable as a person and an artist, ACR are devastated at this loss, we’ll miss her infectious sense of humour and the soaring beauty and passion she brought to our music and our lives.”
Johnson’s debut acoustic solo album, Where Does It Go, which the singer announced shortly before her death, is scheduled for release on September 25.
