Last month, Beyoncé announced her new visual album Black Is King with the release of its first trailer. The new project, which was written directed, and executive-produced by Bey, arrives July 31 via Disney+. Today, a second trailer for Black Is King has arrived. The new teaser features appearances by Beyoncé, JAY-Z, Kelly Rowland, Naomi Campbell, Tina Knowles-Lawson, and more. Pharrell Williams, Lupita Nyong’o, and others will make appearances in the film, according to a press release. Watch the new clip below, and scroll down for the official film poster.
Black Is King will also include contributions from directors Emmanuel Adjei, Blitz Bazawule, Pierre Debusschere, Ibra Ake, Dikayl Rimmasch, Jake Nava, and Kwasi Fordjour. According to a press release, Black Is King was filmed across locations in New York, Los Angeles, South Africa, West Africa, London, and Belgium. Disney recently announced a distribution deal that will make the film available to stream on much of the African Continent, including South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Namibia, Cameroon, Liberia, Burundi, Senegal, Togo, and more.
Beyoncé previously worked with Disney on the “live-action” CGI remake of The Lion King, for which she voiced the role of adult Nala. Bey released a companion album for the film titled The Lion King: The Gift, and later shared a documentary called Beyoncé Presents: Making the Gift about her recording and curating process for the project. Black Is King is based on the music of The Lion King: The Gift.
More recently, Beyoncé dropped her new single “BLACK PARADE,” which arrived on Juneteenth (June 19)— a day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. In late June, Beyoncé was honored at the 2020 BET Awards, where she received the annual Humanitarian Award in recognition of her philanthropic efforts. She also leant her signature to an open letter urging Senate leaders to pass legislation that would protect the voting rights of every citizen, particularly of Black and Brown citizens. The letter was written by Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles-Lawson.
