Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé is joining indie publisher Rogue Games to serve as a strategic advisor. Fils-Aimé retired from his 15-year tenure at Nintendo in April 2019, but has remained an active part of the video game industry ever since.
Fils-Aimé’s retirement from Nintendo was met with surprise and an outpouring of appreciation from Nintendo fans and members of the game industry. Starting at Nintendo of America as executive vice president of sales and marketing in 2003, Fils-Aimé quickly climbed the ranks to become the president of the company in only three years. Fils-Aimé is seen as one of the key figures in turning Nintendo into the company it is today, serving as its public face and helping to shape the friendly and playful public image of a company that can sometimes be inflexible and litigious behind the scenes. Among Fils-Aimé’s many accomplishments at Nintendo, he is reportedly responsible for stopping the company from rebranding with a potentially dated logo as it tried to appeal more to young players.

Fils-Aimé revealed his new role as Rogue Games’ strategic advisor in an interview with Venture Beat. Rogue Games is a publisher based in Los Angeles that currently publishes games on PC and mobile platforms, but plans to expand to releases on all major consoles platforms once the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X debut later this year. Rogue Games was an early adopter of subscription-based mobile game services like Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass, which Fils-Aimé says presents an exciting opportunity for indie games. He also told Venture Beat that he’s confident about indie games having a strong presence in the industry in the next console generation and explained how his retirement last year has actually helped him continue to do work he believes in:
“The benefit of being retired is that I get to work with people I like and companies that I feel are doing unique and valuable things.”
It became clear soon after Fils-Aimé’s retirement that he had no plans to walk away from games for good. In the fall of 2019, Fils-Aimé joined board of directors of the New York Videogame Critics Circle to support its efforts to bring scholarships to underserved students in New York City. Earlier this year, he also joined GameStop’s board of directors, saying that the retail chain was part of a healthy games industry.
Reggie Fils-Aimé has been a part of the games industry for so long that it’s hard to picture it without him. Fortunately, his retirement from Nintendo seems like more of a change of pace than actually stepping away from work, giving him a chance to contribute to games in entirely different ways.
