During the first two seasons of Selling Sunset, the unorthodox romance between Mary and Romain has been a focal element in the drama-filled series. When Mary met Romain, she was 38 and a successful realtor. Romain was a 24-year-old model from France.

Naturally, due to their age difference, Mary and Romain’s relationship has proved to be different, to say the least. Fans could see the difference in Mary and Roman’s maturity during season one. Mary questioned Romain about having children and general life expectations. Romain, being a young model in his 20s, didn’t give the right answers. Mary Fitzgerald was hurt by the responses that she was given. However, Romain eventually decides to commit to Mary and ends up proposing to her midway through the first season. The ring of choice for his future bride was set with a Moissanite gem, rather than a costlier diamond. This, among other things, provoked Mary’s peers to wonder whether Romain is just a trophy husband.

After she showed off the fake diamond engagement ring, many of her co-workers were quick to question Romain’s place in their relationship. Davina and Chrishell Stause speculated that Mary paid for everything and that she was dating Romain mostly for his good looks. Close friend Christine Quinn voiced concerns over Mary rushing into the marriage at Mary and Romain’s engagement party. In a scene in the series, Romain is shown at lunch pretending to have forgotten his wallet, which meant Mary had to pay.

Despite these incidents, the couple does eventually get married at the end of Selling Sunset season 2. It is also reported that Romain has since replaced Mary Fitzgerald’s Moissanite ring with a diamond sparkler, according to Heavy. However, fans still wonder whether Romain and Mary share an intellectual connection. Romain and Mary have clear language issues (and an age gap) that they have to deal with. Romain also seems to be immature, based on aggression he exhibited in some of the scenes. He’s spoken ill to Mary. He also threw a tantrum and banned Davina from Mary’s wedding. Another issue is Romain’s career… it is believed that he makes substantially less money than Mary and doesn’t seem to be on the same intellectual level as his wife.

Furthermore, Mary has a legitimate connection with her boss, Jason Oppenheim. The two share a dog and maintain a close relationship following a now-ended, long-term romance. Whenever the two are seen in the reality series, there are obvious signs that they still share deep feelings for each other. Being the same age and close in status, Mary and Jason make sense as compatible lovebirds. Many fans have accordingly speculated that Romain is just a trophy husband who is meant to be a rebound from Mary’s relationship with Jason. Whatever the case may be, fans can check out more of their relationship on Selling Sunset season 3.
