It’s been nearly two years since the acclaimed Spider-Man video game swung its way onto PS4 consoles and into the hearts of fans and gamers alike. Let’s face it, video games based on comic book properties have typically had more misses than hits (I’m sure I don’t need to remind anybody about the infamous Superman 64 game) and Spidey video games are no exception. Somehow Insomniac Games did the possible and produced a Spider-Man video game that many equate on the same level of the Batman Arkham games.

Much like the Arkahm games, a sequel was pretty much guaranteed and it was only a question of when. Sure enough, today during Sony’s The Future of Gaming online event a trailer was released for a game entitled Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Those who have already played the game are already well aware that the end saw not only Miles Morales gain his powers but also reveal them to Peter Parker who decides to mentor Miles.

In the years since he first debuted in the comics, Miles Morales has certainly come a long way best exemplified by the enormous success of the Into the Spider-Verse animated film that swept awards season. Given the current climate in the country and the Black Lives Matter movement, I can’t think of a more appropriate time for a Miles Morales video game to be released. Obviously Sony and Insomniac Games had no way of anticipating this, so chalk it up to very good timing.

No official release date beyond “Holiday 2020” was announced, so be sure to put it on your holiday wish list later this year!

UPDATED: In an interview with The Telegraph, Sony Interactive Entertainment EVP head of European Business Simon Rutter clarified that Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an expanded remaster of the original game.

“There’s a substantial Miles Morales component, which is the expansion element,” explained Rutter, adding that “also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PlayStation 5 technology and features.”

“I think what is very interesting for everyone to see is how familiar games might be to some degree changed through the workings of PlayStation 5.”

Writer Evan Narcisse revealed via Twitter that he was involved with the game.
