Although a huge selection of games has been announced for the PlayStation 5, not many of them have been officially confirmed to support cross-gen playing. Since the PS5’s release is just around the corner, with Sony having promised their new console will be available by the holidays, this may seem surprising to gamers. However, there are various titles that have been rumored to support cross-platform and cross-gen play, even though official details remain scarce.

On June 11th, Sony held its Future of Gaming event and unveiled exciting details about the hardware and specs of the PS5. The event not only gave players their first look at Sony’s new next-gen video game console but also showed off an impressive number of titles which will be appearing on the PS5, including surprise new games like Stray and an opening reveal showing the return of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5.

There is still a lot of information to be revealed about the PS5, and Sony has said they will hold several more PlayStation 5-focused events in the coming months. However, a few games have been revealed to support players on both the PlayStation 4 and the upcoming PlayStation 5, and many more have been rumored to do so in the future.

PS5 Games That Will Be Cross-Generational

Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six Siege came out over four years ago, so it’s no surprise the PS5 port of Rainbow Six Siege has been confirmed to support content and cross-generational multiplayer with PS4 users. Outriders – set to release in time for the holidays this year – will likely also be available for both PS4 and PS5, given the timing of its release. Similarly, Kotaku reports that Call of Duty’s next Black Ops title will get a Fall 2020 cross-generational release. The developers want to make the game available for players on both generations of consoles in order to maximize potential holiday sale revenue. Gamers can also expect Lord of the Rings: Gollum to be cross-gen when it releases in 2021, as the developer previously confirmed it will be accessible on “all relevant console platforms at that time,Tech Radar reports. Other games, such as Quantum Error, Dustborn, Planet Coaster: Console Edition, Destiny 2, GTA 5, and Fortnite will all also be available on both consoles.

Whether it’s backward compatibility or the possibility of cross-generational play, we’ll be able to transition that community to next-gen,” PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan told CNET.It won’t be a binary choice about whether you have to be either on PlayStation 4 or next-gen to continue your friendship.” Gamers can expect further details to be provided at Sony’s various PS5 reveal events happening throughout the summer. Even though not many PlayStation 5 games may be confirmed to be cross-gen yet, this will likely change as new information is released.
