Jurassic World: Dominion is aiming to restart production in the U.K. in July. The upcoming sequel was one of the many Hollywood projects affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, shutting down in mid-March as the outbreak took a turn for the worse. Like so many other films and TV shows that were in the midst of production at that time, Jurassic World: Dominion has spent the past few months in a holding pattern as the health crisis unfolded, waiting to get the go-ahead to start back up.

In late May, the U.K. passed new film production guidelines, but the major studio tentpoles that were shooting in the country didn’t immediately get back to work. The expectation is large-scale blockbusters like The Batman and Fantastic Beasts 3 won’t be able to resume for a while, due to the size of their crews. Still, those involved with Jurassic World: Dominion pointed to a July date for when filming could restart, and it appears that window was accurate.

According to Deadline, the plan is for Jurassic World: Dominion to resume filming on July 6 at Pinewood Studios. Universal has implemented a number of health and safety procedures that will remain in place until the movie wraps. These include extensive COVID-19 testing, having 150 hand sanitizer stations in the studio, and special training for departments like makeup and costumes. Masks are required at all times; the only exemption are actors filming scenes on-camera. There will also be daily temperature tests and regular cleaning of the studio. Universal’s plan will cost about $5 million in total.

It goes without saying all eyes will be on Jurassic World: Dominion as filming resumes. If everything goes on without a hitch, this could establish a blueprint for other blockbusters to follow, encouraging more studios to sign off on similar guidelines. Of course, should the Jurassic World: Dominion team encounter any problems, it would probably set Hollywood back even further. That’s a plausible scenario, especially since the pandemic remains a fluid situation. Still, Universal deserves some credit for being the first ones out of the gate. Somebody had to take that plunge, and it’s clear the Jurassic World: Dominion team isn’t making light of the situation. They seem to have done everything they can in covering all their bases and making the set as safe an environment as possible.

Jurassic World: Dominion has remained slotted for a June 2021 premiere, even after filming was postponed due to the pandemic. As long as director Colin Trevorrow and company are able to finish principal photography without any other setbacks, it may still be able to make that date. The original Jurassic World (which Trevorrow also directed) was in production from April to August 2014 and made it to theaters in June 2015. So, the team should have plenty of time to get Jurassic World: Dominion ready for next summer, giving Universal another big tentpole to release in 2021.
