Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim teases the release of deleted scenes from The CW’s recent crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Ever since Arrow introduced Grant Gustin as Barry Allen aka The Flash in its second season, the “Arrowverse,” as it is called, has featured numerous crossovers between its assorted shows based on DC Comics. As the network’s roster of superhero programming has increased, so too has the scope of its ambitious multi-show crossover events, culminating in Crisis on Infinite Earths, which aired in five parts over 2019 and 2020.
Crisis on Infinite Earths was widely praised as one of the biggest crossover events in history, not only bringing together the various CW superhero shows, but also other DC Comics universes from film and television, including the 1990 TV version of The Flash, Brandon Routh’s version of Superman, and Tom Welling’s Smallville incarnation of the iconic hero. The cancelled Birds of Prey television universe made an appearance, as did Robert Wuhl, reprising his role from Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film. They even managed to snag Ezra Miller to make a cameo, officially making the DCEU part of the DC TV multiverse.

Even the biggest TV events can get bigger, and producer Marc Guggenheim took to Twitter to tease the release of deleted scenes from the Crisis event. Interestingly, he stated that post-production work on the scenes is being completed. Typically, deleted scenes are released in a raw form, often missing vital audio and visual effects that would have been completed had the scenes not been cut. Since these scenes are being completed, one has to wonder if they will be incorporated into a longer director’s cut version of Crisis on Infinite Earths. In another tweet, however, he said “nothing more special” is coming, potentially quashing hopes of a longer version of the acclaimed TV saga.
Two years before Crisis on Infinite Earths, the big Arrowverse crossover was the critically acclaimed Crisis on Earth-X, which saw the heroes of The CW go up against their evil Nazi doppelgangers of Earth-X. The four-part crossover was a truly spectacular event and remains one of the Arrowverse’s crowning achievements. Previously, Guggenheim had stated that a seamless version of Crisis on Earth-X could have been released without act breaks and with new material added in, but that union rules prevented this from happening.
For Crisis on Infinite Earths, it is unclear how the deleted scenes will be released. Perhaps they will be put on the internet, or on a special home video release of the crossover event. Perhaps Guggenheim negotiated his way through the aforementioned “union rules” and will be able to incorporate the deleted scenes into a director’s cut version of the special. Or maybe they are completing the scenes and releasing them so that fans can edit their own version of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover for the ultimate viewing experience.
