Lilo & Stitch is one of the many titles that can be found on Disney+, but it’s not the same version many fans know, as it has some minor changes in a particular scene. After months of waiting and a lot of promises regarding its content, Disney+ officially launched in November 2019 in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands, expanding a few days later to Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico, and recently to the UK. The platform arrived with a wide catalogue of films and TV shows ready to stream, and keeps adding new ones every month.
One of Disney+’s biggest strengths is the Mouse House’s animated films, among those Lilo & Stitch. Directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, Lilo & Stitch was released in 2002 and took viewers to Hawaii to meet a lonely girl named Lilo and her new and strange pet/friend, Stitch, who is actually an alien. The film was a big hit with critics and audiences, and as it happens with most Disney films, it spawned a franchise with three sequels (direct-to-video and TV films) and TV series, including an anime version.

Lilo & Stitch is one of the many animated Disney films that were available from day one on Disney+, and as the platform continues to expand, viewers are starting to notice some changes that weren’t widely known before – and contrary to others, Lilo & Stitch’s case doesn’t have to do with aspect ratio.
Lilo & Stitch: Why Disney Changed The Laundry Room Scene
Lilo & Stitch followed Lilo’s life with her older sister, Nani, which was a bit complicated sometimes. At one point, Lilo and Nani get into a fight after being visited by a social worker, with Lilo running from her sister and hiding in another room. Her hiding place of choice is the dryer, and Nani is aware of that, so she sets her up. There seems to be nothing wrong or scandalous about this scene (except, maybe, the fight itself), but Disney ended up changing it, and Disney+ subscribers are now noticing it.
Instead of hiding in the dryer, Lilo now hides in a pizza box, next to the washing machine. It’s a subtle change, but not enough to not be caught by viewers. The pizza box is not a recent change nor one exclusive to Disney+ – the dryer was changed shortly after the film was released on DVD, and it was specifically the UK version. Disney decided to turn the dryer into a pizza box due to safety concerns, as the studio didn’t want little kids crawling in dryers as it can be dangerous.
Disney+ has been called out for how its format has messed with the aspect ratio of some of its titles (most notably The Simpsons), for not including certain films, and for the versions it decided to add (as is the case of the Star Wars saga). While the change in Lilo & Stitch is not one that messes with the plot nor the characters, it’s one that fans couldn’t just ignore, though it has to be noted that this was a change that had to be done for a good reason.
