Disney+’s release in UK doesn’t have Frozen 2 streaming on the service despite it being made available early in the United States. Disney announced in early March that Frozen 2 would be available for streaming on Disney+ as early as March 15 in the United States, three months ahead of schedule and only a few weeks after it released digitally. Other countries had to wait an additional two days. However, Disney+ users in the UK won’t be able to stream the film until July.
Frozen 2 became the highest grossing animated film when it was released in November 2019. A follow-up to 2013’s smash hit, Frozen, the sequel brought back to the original cast to further explore the origins of Elsa’s ice powers. While some felt that Frozen 2 didn’t live up to the original, it proved to be another hit for Disney in a strong year for the company. Disney increased its goodwill among fans when it announced that it would release Frozen 2 on Disney+ months earlier than originally planned. The early release was meant to help the families and individuals stuck in isolation during the current coronavirus pandemic. However, UK users don’t have the movie available yet.

According to Empire, UK fans who try to watch Frozen 2 on Disney+ will see the following message: “Due to existing agreements this title will be available on July 17, 2020.” The main reason for this is that Frozen 2 wasn’t originally planned to release on streaming until July anyway, and it’s possible that whatever agreements Disney has in the UK could be less malleable than the ones in the US. In this particular case, these agreements could have more to do with the video-on-demand platforms that Frozen 2 is currently available on in the UK.
Disney+ only just launched in the UK, and a movie as anticipated as Frozen 2 could provide a lot of money for UK video-on-demand companies, including Amazon and iTunes – both of which have Frozen 2 for digital rent or purchase. It’s likely that these companies secured the UK rights for the film until this summer when it was set to stream worldwide.
The delayed launch of Disney+ in the UK could have played a larger role, too. American audiences have been able to stream everything from classic Disney animated films to The Mandalorian to much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for months now. In the UK, however, people are just now starting to dig through the Disney+ catalogue. It makes sense for the company to breathe before releasing a big title like Frozen 2. Disney is a box office powerhouse, meaning it can ride on the backs of its other new releases for a while.
The early release of Frozen 2 and other movies on Disney+ excited a lot of fans, and it helped the upcoming weeks of isolation feel somewhat more manageable. Unfortunately, UK fans will have to wait until summer for the same treat. That isn’t all bad: Disney+ has an impressive list of scripted series, reality shows, and classic blockbusters to tide over the UK audiences. That’s a lot of media to get through before this summer, and it could make the eventual release of Frozen 2 even sweeter.
