Wonder Woman 1984 is the most exciting superhero movie of 2020. Releasing on June 5th, 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 will likely be the blockbuster event of the year. The upcoming DC film features a strong cast, solid director and limited competition.

Directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot as the titular superhero, Wonder Woman 1984 follows up on 2017’s Wonder Woman, a critical and box office hit. The film took both Jenkins and Gadot to the top of the superhero movie mountaintop. Wonder Woman 1984 is the most exciting superhero movie of 2020 for many reasons. For one, the film is the sequel to a smash hit. While sequels don’t always capture the magic of the original, the team behind Wonder Woman 1984 definitely suggests it will. Not only is Patty Jenkins back in the director’s chair, but she is also joined by Hans Zimmer to score the film. Zimmer’s return to the DCEU suggests a new level of confidence and intrigue in the legendary composer, who last scored Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

On a casting level, Gal Gadot has risen to be a superstar among superhero actors. Wonder Woman 1984 is the actresses 4th time playing Diana Prince, 5th if you count the Snyder Cut. Her presence on screen for the character speaks for itself. Joining her is Chris Pine, reprising as Steve Trevor. The two shared excellent on-screen chemistry in the first film and having the two share a screen again is undoubtedly one of the reasons Wonder Woman 1984 is so exciting. It will also be the introduction of Maxwell Lordplayed by Pedro Pascal as he comes off a heroic bout as The Mandalorian

Wonder Woman 1984 has become the most anticipated movie of 2020. One of the reasons for this is because the competition around its release is thinner than normal. 2019 was the year of sagas ending and stories concluding in culmination films: Marvel closied the decade by ending the Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars capped off the Skywalker saga with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker2020 looks to be a return to more standard blockbusters. This year, Marvel will be releasing Black Widow and The Eternals. While both will undoubtedly be hits, neither reach the hype and excitement that Wonder Woman 1984 brings to the table.

Similarly, Sony will be following up with Venom 2 and MorbiusWhile Venom 2 definitely has a fair shot at being a billion-dollar hit, Wonder Woman 1984 is still much more popular. Finally, WB and DC will be kicking off the year with Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). While the film marks the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the smaller budget and R-Rating does not give it the same fire that Wonder Woman has behind her.

Wonder Woman 1984 is an opportunity for DC to truly take the crown of the most successful superhero film of 2020. As Marvel’s phase 4 takes a slower approach to build new characters, DC can move to their own pseudo-phase 2, releasing highly anticipated sequels based on their most successful IPs. Wonder Woman 1984 has the best mix of strong directing and acting talent, plus the fire of a great first film, fuelling its anticipation and excitement among audiences for 2020.
