Hopper’s fate will not be left hanging after the Stranger Thing 3 cliffhanger finale. Netflix announced Monday that it has renewed the nostalgia-heavy sci-fi series for a fourth season. More news: the first Stranger Things 4 teaser gives us a pretty major clue about what’s ahead.
In the announcement video, shown above, we see the Stranger Things 4 title art slowly decaying into the grey rubbish style of the Upside Down before the sound of a clock rings out and the teaser reads, “We’re not in Hawkins anymore.”
That messaging fits with what we saw in the Stranger Things 3 finale, as Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) sold her house and moved away with her kids, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Will (Noah Schnapp), as well as the now re-orphaned Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) — who was left behind after Hopper (David Harbour) was potentially killed in the underground Russian base beneath the Starcourt Mall as Joyce closed the gate. (Is Hopper really dead? We discussed that here.)
In addition to announcing the return of Stranger Things for Season 4, Netflix also revealed that it has inked an overall deal with the show’s co-creators, Matt and Ross Duffer.
In a statement, Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos said of both news items, “The Duffer Brothers have captivated viewers around the world with Stranger Things and we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with them to bring their vivid imaginations to other film and series projects our members will love. We can’t wait to see what The Duffer Brothers have in store when they step outside the world of The Upside Down.”
Meanwhile, the Duffers themselves also issued a statement to say, “We are absolutely thrilled to continue our relationship with Netflix. Ted Sarandos, Cindy Holland, Brian Wright, and Matt Thunell took a huge chance on us and our show — and forever changed our lives. From our first pitch meeting to the release of Stranger Things 3, the entire team at Netflix has been nothing short of sensational, providing us with the kind of support, guidance, and creative freedom we always dreamed about. We can’t wait to tell many more stories together — beginning, of course, with a return trip to Hawkins!”
Based on their statement, it sounds like we’ll at least have some kind of action going down in the series’ original homestead.
Stranger Things Seasons 1-3 are currently available to stream on Netflix.
